An alibi is an argument that the person was elsewhere than expected. An alibi is often used in criminal investigations. The accused must provide irrefutable evidence – an “alibi” to prove that he was not at the scene at the time of the crime. So he could not commit the crime.

In practice, so-called alibism has developed from the word alibi.
